Mathieu Lupien: Transcriptional Dependencies in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

“How do you find what drives a cancer subtype that is defined by what it doesn’t have?

That was the challenge Shalini Bahl, Nergiz Dogan-Artun and an incredible team took on with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a disease defined by the absence of the markers that characterize other major breast cancer subtypes. What followed was the discovery of diverse regulatory programs that give each TNBC tumour its identity.

Our new study, published in Nature Portfolio (Nature Communications), shows how combining chromatin accessibility with transcriptional regulatory networks can expose the transcription factor dependencies for individual tumours and how to use those to repurpose existing drugs to help match different TNBCs to tailored treatment options.
