Toward More Precise Classification of HER2 Mutations in NSCLC – Lung Cancer Europe

HER2-mutated lung cancer is becoming increasingly treatable. But which HER2 mutation someone has may be just as important as knowing they have one.

A new editorial in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology argues that the commonly used term ‘HER2 exon 20 insertion’ is becoming too broad for what we now know about HER2-mutated NSCLC.

HER2 mutations occur across different parts of the gene, and emerging evidence suggests their location can affect both the biology of the cancer and how it responds to treatment.

The authors argue for more precise molecular classification, supported by modern next-generation sequencing, rather than grouping these different mutations together.

As targeted treatments for HER2-mutated lung cancer develop, that distinction could become increasingly important when choosing treatment and designing clinical trials.”
