“New clinical trial publication in Nature Communications!
I am happy to share our latest work: ՛Extracorporeal photopheresis for the treatment of steroid-refractory immune-related adverse events from immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy: a multi-center phase Ib/II clinical trial․՛
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have transformed cancer care, but severe immune-related adverse events (irAEs) often force treatment interruption and high-dose steroids, which can blunt anti-tumor immunity.
When steroids fail, patients urgently need second-line options that are both safe and effective.
In our multi-center phase Ib/II ECIR trial, led from the University Medical Center Freiburg, we tested extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) in 30 patients with steroid-refractory irAEs.
The results position ECP as a promising, well-tolerated treatment for steroid-refractory irAEs:
- No ECP-related serious adverse events
- 96.3% overall response rate, with a median response time of 7 days
- 100% overall response rate in ICI-colitis patients
- Steroids reduced in all patients
- No signs of impaired tumor control
A huge Thank You to Robert Zeiser, Petya Apostolova, Roxane Riemer and all co-authors, partner centers, the clinical teams and patients.”
