“My friends,⠀
- Prostate cancer:
Small changes in fat, potential benefit to survival⠀ - The problem:⠀
Most men with non-metastatic prostate cancer live for many years after diagnosis.
Protecting their heart and overall health is, therefore, an important part of their long-term care.⠀
- What did a new study show?
Study published in JAMA Network Open followed 4,884 men with non-metastatic prostate cancer over a median of nearly 13 years.⠀
Men with the highest saturated fat consumption had a 24% higher risk of death from any cause, compared to those who consumed the least.⠀
In contrast, replacing some animal and saturated fats with vegetable and unsaturated fats was associated with lower overall mortality.⠀
The benefit was mainly about cardiovascular health and not specifically prostate cancer mortality.⠀
What can we do? We don’t need to exclude all fats. Their type and origin are mainly important.⠀
We can replace butter, fatty meats and other foods rich in saturated fats more often with:⠀
- olive oil
- nuts and seeds
- legumes
- avocado
- fish and other sources of unsaturated fats⠀
What do we need to know? The study was observational. It shows a strong correlation, but it doesn’t prove that diet changes alone cause longer survival.⠀
Of course, they do not replace cancer treatment or medical monitoring.
But they are a simple and useful part of overall care after diagnosis.⠀
The message: ⠀
After prostate cancer, it is not only important to control the tumor.
It is important to protect the whole person.⠀
Small, consistent changes in fat quality can support cardiovascular and overall health, and possibly a longer, healthier life.”
