”Patients receiving hospice care have long been excluded from cancer research. It’s time to reconsider that assumption. Our new JCO Journals Oncology Practice article explores why hospice enrollment shouldn’t be viewed as incompatible with research participation.
Importantly, many patients want the opportunity to contribute. Participants in our recent Nature Medicine study described research participation as meaningful-a reminder that advancing science and receiving comfort-focused care need not be mutually exclusive.
With thoughtful study design and close collaboration between oncology and hospice teams, we can generate new insights into advanced cancer while honoring patients’ goals and autonomy.”
