Layth Mula-Hussain: First Patient Enrolled in SHIFT-PB Trial Completed Her Treatment Successfully

Layth Mula-Hussain, Radiation Oncologist at BC Cancer, Assistant Professor at The University of British Columbia, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today marks an important milestone for the SHIFT-PB trial.

I am very pleased to share that today, Monday, June 29, 2026, the first patient enrolled in the trial successfully completed her single-session adjuvant partial breast radiotherapy treatment, receiving 13 Gy in one fraction, smoothly and without any obvious immediate issues.

I had the privilege of recruiting the first candidate for this trial, which is led by Robert Olson. This represents an encouraging first step for a promising study evaluating whether single-fraction partial breast irradiation may offer a safe, convenient, and efficient option for selected patients with early-stage, node-negative breast cancer.

The SHIFT-PB trial is a phase II randomized study comparing single-fraction partial breast irradiation with the current hypofractionated approach of 26 Gy in 5 fractions, with the goal of assessing feasibility, toxicity, local control, quality of life, and patient-reported outcomes.

If successful, this work may help pave the way for future phase III research and potentially contribute to evolving standards of care in breast radiotherapy, especially for patients who face travel, access, or wait-time barriers.
Trial details can be accessed here.

I look forward to continuing enrollment and contributing to this important effort to improve access, convenience, and patient-centered breast cancer care.”
