Katy Beckermann: Rethinking the Role of TAMs in Kidney Cancer

Katy Beckermann, Medical Director of GU Clinical Research at Tennessee Oncology shared on X:

TAMs get blamed for immune evasion in kidney cancer.

Here, more of them trended with a better response to first-line nivolumab.

  •  HCRN GU16-260, tested first-line nivolumab monotherapy with salvage ipi in metastatic ccRCC n=72 ccRCC:
  •  CD163+ TAM density, OR 2.21, PFS HR 0.77
  •  Nonexhausted CD8+ TILs: OR 1.54, PFS HR 0.79. TLS density moved the same way, PFS HR 0.92
  •  PD-1+ Tregs ran opposite: high fraction, PFS 3.4 vs 10.9 months

Combined, they split outcomes better than alone. Hypothesis-generating, not a validated assay continues to argue for multi-marker panels in future trials.

Emphasis on amazing team work and learning from every patient about biology on every trial.”
