Julie S. Torode։ Two Anti-Cancer Vaccines Rank Among the Most Impactful Vaccines in Gavi’s Portfolio

Julie S. Torode, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Patient and Community Engagement, Institute of Cancer Policy at King’s College London, shared Ashiqul Islama’s, Senior Officer, R&D, Vaccine Division at Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd., post on LinkedIn, adding:

Two anti-cancer vaccines rank among the most impactful vaccines in Gavi’s portfolio

A timely reminder from a modelling study published in May by the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC) which estimated vaccine impact across 117 low- and middle-income countries using impact ratios (deaths or disability-adjusted life-years averted per 1,000 vaccinations)

The findings are striking:

  • HPV vaccination – which prevents cervical cancer – ranks number 1 in lives saved.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination – which prevents liver cancer – ranks number 3

These results reinforce a powerful message: vaccines don’t just prevent infectious diseases – they are also among our most effective tools for cancer prevention, saving millions of lives through long-term protection.”

Quoting Ashiqul Islama’s post:

Which vaccine saves the most lives per dose?

Scientists finally compared 14 vaccines, using the same yardstick, in 117 countries!

The answer:

  • HPV – 11.2 deaths averted per 1,000 vaccinations.
  • Measles – 6.1 deaths averted per 1,000 vaccinations.
  • Hepatitis B – 5.0 deaths averted per 1,000 vaccinations.

Published in The Lancet by the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC).

What makes this study different?

Previous research counted total lives saved.
This one asked, ‘Which vaccine delivers the most impact per dose when budgets force a choice?’

As health funding tightens globally, that question matters more than ever.

One nuance worth noting:

  • These numbers aren’t a simple ranking.
  • Impact varies by region, disease burden, and delivery strategy.
  • The goal is to inform decisions, not replace them.

Which vaccine’s impact surprised you the most?

Repost if someone in your network works in global health or immunization.
