For years, we’ve focused almost exclusively on reimbursement. Every proposed CMS payment change sparks the same debate: payments are too low.
But what if reimbursement isn’t the root problem? What if it is simply exposing an economic model built for a healthcare system that no longer exists?
In my latest article, I explore how two outstanding books – The Great American Healthcare Heist by Chris Deacon and Relocalizing Health by Dave Chase – provide a powerful lens for understanding the real challenges facing radiation oncology. High fixed costs, capital allocation, hypofractionation, artificial intelligence, geographic maldistribution, and enterprise accountability are converging to reshape our specialty.
This isn’t an article about defending the past. It’s about designing the future. If we’re serious about preserving access to cancer care, we must move beyond reimbursement debates and begin redesigning the economics of radiation oncology itself.
