Hong Jae Chon: Nivolumab Plus Ipilimumab in First-Line Unresectable HCC

Hong Jae Chon, Professor of Medical Oncology and Director of the Cancer Center at CHA Bundang Medical Center, shared on X:

“Expert perspectives on first-line nivolumab plus ipilimumab in unresectable HCC from Check Mate9 DW!

A 4-part podcast covering primary efficacy, key subgroups, the early OS crossing, and imAE management

  • Nivo+Ipi vs Len/Sor (N = 668): median OS 23.7 vs 20.6 mo; ORR 36% vs 13%; 36-mo OS 38% vs 24%
  • Nivo+Ipi showed consistent efficacy across ALBI grades & high-risk subgroups, with potential preservation of liver function
  • Early OS curve crossing: HR 1.65 at 0–6 mo, then 0.61 after 6 mo. This was substantially driven by deaths from AEs unrelated to study treatment.
  • imAEs occurred in 58% (Gr 3–4, 28%); high-dose steroid use did not appear to compromise efficacy DOI:
