Gustavo Viani: Can PLND Be Avoided in Prostate Cancer?

Gustavo Viani, Professor of Radiation Oncology at Ribeirão Preto Medical School, shared a post on X, about a paper by Reha-Baris Incesu et al. published in Nature.

“Can PLND Be Avoided in Prostate Cancer?

A study shows that negative PSMA PET can help intermediate-risk prostate cancer skip pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) during radical prostatectomy.

Outcomes:

  • BCR-free survival: 78.7% (PLND) vs. 76.7% (no PLND) (p = 0.8)
  • 90% accuracy in ruling out lymph node invasion (LNI).

Skipping PLND may complications without compromising outcomes.

Safer surgery, same results!”
