George Kumar: Can We Detect Cancer Years Before It’s Diagnosed?

George Kumar, Senior Director at AstraZeneca, shared a post on LinkedIn, by Yuxuan Wang et al., published in Cancer Discovery.

“Can we detect cancer years before it’s diagnosed?
A promising study suggests yes.

Earlier detection remains one of the most effective strategies to reduce cancer mortality. Across cancer types and stages, therapies work best when the disease burden is low.

This new research led by Bert Vogelstein, M.D., group with first author Yuxuan Wang, M.D., Ph.D. shows that circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) can be detected up to 3 years before a clinical cancer diagnosis. The study also outlines the sensitivity thresholds needed to make such ultra-early detection feasible—potentially transforming how we approach screening and prevention.
