Felipe Couñago, Medical Director of GenesisCare Spain and Radiation Oncologist, shared on LinkedIn:
“Day 3 of ESMO 2026. Five studies that caught my attention from a radiation oncology perspective, focusing on GU, gastrointestinal and lung cancers:
DASL-HiCaP | Prostate cancer
Adding darolutamide to ADT and radiotherapy improved 4-year metastasis-free survival from 88% to 95% (HR 0.42). Postoperative radiotherapy patients were also included, although the benefit in this subgroup requires further clarification.
MASTERPLAN | Pancreatic cancer
SBRT at 40 Gy in five fractions reduced 12-month locoregional recurrence from 52% to 20%, with median overall survival of 22 vs 14 months. Encouraging phase II results that require confirmation in a larger trial.
UNION | Rectal cancer
Three-year event-free survival reached 91% with short-course radiotherapy, CAPOX and camrelizumab, compared with 77% with long-course chemoradiotherapy and CAPOX.
SARON | Oligometastatic NSCLC
Consolidative radiotherapy improved local control and progression-free survival, without a demonstrated overall survival benefit.
SANO | Oesophageal cancer
After complete clinical response, 5-year overall survival was 50% with surveillance versus 54% with surgery, while distant metastases were higher with surveillance.
Plenty to discuss at our next multidisciplinary meetings.”
