Federico Losco, Executive Director at Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group(LACOG , shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today we publish in JCO Global Oncology an analysis of Latin American representation at the ASCO Genitourinary Cancers Symposium (2021-2025).
What did we do?
- We reviewed all the scientific papers published by Latin American authors at the most important congress of the specialty in the world.
- We saw how many Latin American professionals were part of the discussion and presentation of papers in the oral sessions.
What did we see?
- Only 6 of 540 faculty participations (≈1%) corresponded to researchers affiliated with Latin America.
- However, we found 53 participations of Latin American researchers as authors or co-authors of studies presented in oral sessions.
- Among 101 discussants, none came from the region.
- Only 1 of 136 moderators was Latin American.
- Even when Latin America participated in studies selected for oral presentation, only 11% were presented by a researcher from the region.
The question then ceases to be how much Latin America produces.
The real question is:
Who has the opportunity to represent this scientific production in front of the international community?
Scientific diversity depends not only on who does research, but also on who occupies the stage to interpret it, teach it and lead the discussion.
We hope that this work will contribute to opening a necessary conversation about representation, leadership, and equity in global oncology.”
