Early Cancer Detection Can Dramatically Improve Survival Outcomes – European Cancer Organisation

European Cancer Organisation shared on LinkedIn:

“Early detection saves lives. And the difference can be dramatic.

  • Breast cancer: over 90% five-year survival at Stage I vs 20–30% at Stage IV
  • Lung cancer: over 60% when localised vs less than 10% when spread
  • Prostate cancer: over 95% when localised vs around 30% when metastatic

This EU Screening Week we say it loud and proud: screening should not be a luxury – but a right.

WHO’s European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies recommends EU countries modernise population – based cancer screening by:

  • Deploying key innovations such as self – sampling, risk – stratified screening and AI-assisted image reading
  • Moving towards organised and more risk – based screening
  • Investing in health – professional training, strong data infrastructure, public communication and robust evaluation
