“Quality of life data from the phase 3 APOLLO trial further support an arsenic trioxide-based approach for high-risk acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL).
In this ecancer interview from EHA2026, Prof Fabio Efficace (Fondazione GIMEMA – Franco Mandelli Onlus) discusses patient-reported outcomes comparing arsenic trioxide plus all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) with standard ATRA plus chemotherapy in newly diagnosed high-risk APL.
At the end of consolidation, patients receiving arsenic trioxide plus ATRA reported statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in several quality of life measures, including:
- Physical functioning
- Fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Appetite loss
- Global health status
- Social and role functioning
Improvements in fatigue were consistently observed across both EORTC QLQ-C30 and FACIT-Fatigue assessments and exceeded established thresholds for clinical relevance.
These findings add an important patient-centred perspective to the clinical efficacy of the chemotherapy-free regimen, showing that arsenic trioxide plus ATRA can deliver meaningful quality of life benefits alongside improved clinical outcomes.
