Deb Schrag: New Research Highlights Opportunities for Germline Risk Detection Across Cancer Patients

Deb Schrag, Chair, Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, shared on LinkedIn:

“Whether your focus is population health or delivering cancer care, please check out this important new paper from Zsofia Stadler and Luis Diaz.

In nearly 40,000 patients with a cancer diagnosis they show that the incidence of germline risk is about 12% for those with early onset diagnoses (median age 44), 15.6% for those with cancers diagnosed in middle age (median age 64) and 18% for those diagnosed at older age (median 82).

There is currently much attention focused on MCEDs for screening but right in front of us is an immense untapped opportunity to identify at risk individuals and to intensify screening and prevention.”
