Corinne Faivre-Finn: Bridging Evidence Gaps with Pragmatic Trials in Lung Cancer
Corinne Faivre-Finn, Professor of Thoracic Radiation Oncology at The University of Manchester, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in Lung Cancer:
“New publication in Lung Cancer!
Pleased to share our latest paper: ‘An introduction to pragmatic trials in lung cancer research: A multi-faceted approach’, now published in Lung Cancer journal.
Pragmatic clinical trials (PTs) are gaining traction as a powerful methodology to evaluate interventions in real-world clinical settings, moving beyond the controlled environments of traditional RCTs. They are designed to reflect the realities of routine care – broad eligibility criteria, streamlined procedures, and patient-centred outcomes – making the findings more generalisable and impactful for day-to-day decision-making.
Our review:
- Introduces the key features of pragmatic trials
- Explores the PRECIS-2 tool to assess and guide trial design
- Discusses common challenges – such as recruitment, consent, endpoints, and data quality – with practical solutions
- Highlights how PTs can generate regulatory-grade evidence and shape clinical guidelines
- Showcases ongoing pragmatic trials in lung cancer, from screening to treatment delivery
We believe PTs offer a more scalable and sustainable path to improve care for people with lung cancer, addressing longstanding evidence gaps and supporting better-informed decisions between clinicians and patients.
Many thanks to Sarah Bowen Jones, who led on this paper, and to Gareth Price.”
