Charles Roberts: Cancer remains a formidable challenge that demands the pursuit of innovative treatments

Charles Roberts, Cancer Center Director and Executive Vice President at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared an article by Max Kozlov, et al. on LinkedIn:

“As the leading cause of death by disease for children in the United States, cancer remains a formidable challenge that demands the pursuit of innovative treatments and preventive measures. And opportunities are now emerging to treat, and potentially even cure, diseases of childhood that have been uniformly fatal.

Our commitment to saving children’s lives is reflected in our cutting-edge research, which encompasses everything from state-of-the-art buildings and laboratories with high-performance computing to clinical trials for children with otherwise incurable cancer. This vital work requires a robust support system. From the dedicated individuals who wash glassware and repair equipment to those who schedule meetings and ensure patient safety during clinical trials, these roles are crucial.

Much of these essential infrastructure and jobs are made possible by indirect payments from federal grants. These funds are not just about supporting individual projects; they allow our scientists to focus on what they do best—conducting life-saving research to find new treatments.

Direct and indirect federal grant support is key to the pursuit of our mission at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Cuts to these funds could mean fewer new treatments developed for children, and ultimately, fewer lives saved. As we continue to push the boundaries of pediatric cancer research, continued support from the NIH is of great importance.”

‘Devastating’ cuts to NIH grants by Trump’s team put on hold by US judge.
