“Today is World Hepatitis Day.
Hepatitis B is a leading cause of liver cancer, which is one of the fastest-growing causes of cancer related deaths in Victoria, yet many cases are preventable.
We know that testing, monitoring, and treatment saves lives.
Data from The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity shows that antiviral treatment saved 409 lives in 2024.
Modelling also suggests that reaching Australia’s hepatitis B treatment targets could save hundreds more lives in the years ahead.
Preventing hepatitis B related liver cancer requires more than treatment alone.
It also requires partnership between the hepatitis and cancer sectors, making the link between hepatitis and cancer much more visible nationally and globally.
