Sharif Folorunso, Consultant Medical and Radiation Oncologist at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, shared his recent article on LinkedIn:
“Publication Alert!
Enhancing Breast Cancer Care in Nigeria: Key Insights from Our Latest Study titled “Health Care Professional Adherence to Breast Cancer Management Guidelines in Nigeria” published in JAMA Network Open.
Guideline Awareness vs. Adherence: While 92% of healthcare professionals (HCPs) believe that breast cancer guidelines improve patient outcomes, only 51% routinely consult them.
Role of Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (MDT) Discussions: Regular engagement in MDT discussions is associated with increased awareness and adherence to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Harmonized Guidelines. Notably, 83% of HCPs expressed the need for regular MDT discussions to enhance guideline adherence.
Factors Influencing Guideline Consultation: Completing a cancer-related fellowship, specializing in clinical oncology, dedicating more time to breast healthcare delivery, and regular MDT engagement are associated with higher rates of guideline consultation.
These findings underscore the importance of fostering MDT collaboration to standardize and improve breast cancer care in Nigeria.
