Anirban Maitra: Flavio Rocha and Colleagues on Rapid Metastatic Recurrence after Pancreatic Cancer Resection
Anirban Maitra, Professor of Pathology and Translational Molecular Pathology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared on X about recent paper by Flavio Rocha et al., titled “Rapid metastatic recurrence after pancreatic cancer resection: a multi-center, regional analysis of trends in surgical failure over two decades” published on HPB.

“New study from Flavio Rocha, Patrick Worth and colleagues at OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.
Rapid metastatic recurrence after Pancreatic Cancer resection: a multi-center, regional analysis of trends in surgical failure over two decades Approximately ~25% of patients who undergo surgery recur rapidly within six months, and not surprisingly these patients have poor median survival. The proportion of patients with rapid recurrence has not changed over time, suggesting we are still not appropriately selecting individuals for this major surgery, using biological plus clinical criteria (versus clinical features of resectability alone). I have often stared at the far left end of the PRODIGE survival data and wondered how could we have better identified those rapid progressors? And channeled them into systemic therapy as soon as possible. An important area for collaboration with our surgeon scientist colleagues.”
Dr. Anirban Maitra serves as Professor of Pathology and Translational Molecular Pathology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center since August 2013, and directs the Sheikh Ahmed Pancreatic Cancer Research Center. He leads an NCI-funded laboratory dedicated to pancreatic cancer research, focusing on genetics and molecular pathology in human and mouse models. His research aims to advance early detection and interception strategies to enhance patient survival rates in pancreatic cancer.
