Anirban Maitra: Identification of the Molecular Subtypes of Pancreatic Cancer

Anirban Maitra, Professor of Pathology and Translational Molecular Pathology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared a recent article by Pouya Ahmadvand on X:

“A Deep Learning Approach for the Identification of the Molecular Subtypes of Pancreatic Cancer Based on Whole Slide Pathology Images.

Can H andE images be used to train a model that can stratify basal and classical subtypes of pancreatic cancer?

The ground truth used for training the AI model was TCGA images with subtypes based on the published PurIST algorithm. Two external validation cohorts were used.

A two step process was deployed, with step 1 separating tumor regions from normal, and step 2 further sub classifying tumor regions into transcriptomic subtypes.

Interesting but not surprising how much morphology (gland forming versus not) correlates with molecular subtype.”

Dr. Anirban Maitra serves as Professor of Pathology and Translational Molecular Pathology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center since August 2013, and directs the Sheikh Ahmed Pancreatic Cancer Research Center. He leads an NCI-funded laboratory dedicated to pancreatic cancer research, focusing on genetics and molecular pathology in human and mouse models. His research aims to advance early detection and interception strategies to enhance patient survival rates in pancreatic cancer.
