“Childhood Cancer Awareness Month must also be Adolescent Cancer Awareness Month.
Adolescents are certainly not ‘older children,’ but rather unique patients with specific clinical characteristics and psychosocial needs that are often unmet.
As the writer Alessandro Baricco says, ‘The middle ground is a strange land, where one does not always know how to walk’ (‘Nella terra di mezzo: storie di giovani malati di tumore’, PIEMME, 2024), and therefore, ‘with humility, we look for the right trajectory, the rhythm, the lightness of moving forward. It is a work of patience, I sense, and of courageous vision.’
This is exactly what AIEOP has been doing for years, standing on the front lines for adolescent patients too, with its dedicated Working Group, the creation of specific care models, and cooperation with both the adult medical world and the broader European vision through the Network of Expertise on Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA), promoted by the European Commission as part of the JANE– EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer.
