Abhishek Shankar: IARC Perspective on Lung Cancer Screening in NEJM

Abhishek Shankar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS New Delhi, shared on LinkedIn:

“I am deeply grateful and humbled to share my first publication as an author in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) – ‘IARC Perspective on Lung Cancer Screening.’ Some moments in an academic journey are difficult to put into words. This is one of them.

For me, this publication is much more than a paper. This publication is a part of IARC handbook 21 on Lung Cancer Screening and the culmination of one year of learning and working with best global subject experts.

The journey began with the IARC Handbook 21 on Lung Cancer Screening, where I had the privilege of being part of an international working group of 23 experts from 17 countries.

I was deeply honoured to be the only expert from India, and among the six experts representing Asia.I always wondered what it would feel like to contribute to the pages of one of the world’s most respected medical journals.

The IARC work reinforced an important lesson: science has no borders, and the best evidence is built when perspectives from different countries, health systems and populations come together.

For India and many other countries in Asia, lung cancer screening presents both an opportunity and a challenge. The evidence must ultimately translate into screening strategies that are effective, affordable, equitable and relevant to our populations.

I am immensely thankful to the IARC for the opportunity and the entire Handbook 21 Working Group Vivienne Milch Mahdi Sheikh Beatrice Lauby-Secretan Neamtiu Luciana Wendy Cooper Rayjean Hung Rafael Meza Arn Migowski for the learning.
