Dégi László Csaba: Awareness of Genomic Testing Among Patients with Breast Cancer in Europe
Dégi László Csaba, President of the European Cancer Organisation and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), shared an article by Antonella Cardone, et al. on LinkedIn:
“We’re proud to announce the publication of our latest research in The Breast | 5.7 IF, titled ‘Awareness of Genomic Testing Among Patients with Breast Cancer in Europe.’
This study shines a light on a pressing issue in oncology: across five European countries, 84.6% of women with HR+/HER2- breast cancer feel underinformed about genomic testing—a powerful tool for personalized treatment decisions.
Even more striking?
Only 24.6% of these women underwent testing, despite its potential to guide chemotherapy choices and improve outcomes.
Our survey of 566 patients revealed that:
- 70.3% weren’t even advised by healthcare professionals on where to find more information.
- 43.5% wanted greater clarity on additional testing options.
These gaps underscore a critical need for enhanced patient education, better communication from healthcare providers, and stronger support from patient associations.
This work, part of the myC initiative by Cancer Patients Europe, is a call to action. Let’s bridge this awareness gap, empower patients, and ensure genomic testing becomes a cornerstone of breast cancer care.
Join the conversation—what steps can we take together?”
