Jasmin Hundal: The Overlapping Biology of Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease
Jasmin Hundal, Hematology Oncology Fellow at Cleveland Clinic and a board-certified internal medicine physician, shared an article by Elisa Avolio, et al. on LinkedIn:
“The Overlapping Biology of Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease.
Cancer and cardiovascular disease may seem distinct, but they share key molecular pathways that drive both conditions. With cardiometabolic disease on the rise, understanding these shared mechanisms could help us develop therapies that benefit both cancer patients and those at risk for CVD.
What are the common pathways?
- Chronic inflammation & immune dysfunction fuel both tumor growth and vascular damage.
- Fibrosis & stromal remodeling contribute to heart failure and tumor progression.
- Hypoxia & angiogenesis drive both ischemic heart disease and cancer metastasis.
- CHIP (clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential) increases CVD risk and impacts cancer biology.
AI-driven models can analyze datasets to identify shared molecular targets, enabling us to develop new therapies that protect cancer patients and their hearts. We can move toward precision medicine that improves long-term health outcomes by integrating oncology and cardiology insights.”
Shared molecular, cellular, and environmental hallmarks in cardiovascular disease and cancer: Any place for drug repurposing?
