Fedro Alessandro Peccatori, MD PhD

Fedro Alessandro Peccatori is a prominent medical oncologist specializing in gynecologic oncology. He is the Director of the Fertility and Procreation Unit within the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Department of Gynecology, European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Peccatori’s path to medicine was deeply influenced by his family. Both his father, Giuseppe, and grandfather, Fedro, were doctors, so it felt natural for him to pursue a medical career. However, his commitment to medicine grew even stronger after his father passed away from metastatic kidney cancer in 1974 when Dr. Peccatori was just 11 years old. This loss shaped his desire to help others facing similar challenges, though at first, he didn’t consider oncology as a career path. Instead, he was drawn to clinical pathology and immunology, where he worked in a lab during medical school, where he studied ovarian cancer.

Though he initially specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Peccatori’s interest in the medical treatment of women’s cancers continued to grow. After completing his PhD in Oncological Sciences, focusing on germ cell tumors of the ovary, he decided to pursue a specialization in Medical Oncology. Over the years, he became an expert in treating cancers in young women, especially those with tumors during pregnancy or reproductive health issues related to cancer.

Dr. Peccatori’s education began at Ladue High School in St. Louis, MO, where he graduated in 1980. He went on to earn his Medical Degree from the University of Milan in 1988. Afterward, he specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Milan, completing his specialization in 1995. He then earned a PhD in Oncological Sciences in Gynecology at Sapienza University in Rome in 1996, followed by a specialization in Medical Oncology at the University of Milan in 1999.

Career

Dr. Peccatori holds several prominent positions in the field of oncology. Since 2011, he has served as the Director of the Fertility and Procreation Unit in Gynecologic Oncology at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) in Milan. His leadership roles at IEO also include directing the Allogeneic Transplantation Unit in the Division of Oncohematology from 2007 to 2011, and serving as Associate Director (2004-2007), Senior Deputy Director (2001-2004), and Deputy Director (1998-2001) in the same division.

From 2016 to 2024, he was the Scientific Director at the European School of Oncology (ESO), driving initiatives in e-learning, collaborations with European universities, and clinical training at top cancer centers. He contributed to the redesign of ESO Masterclasses in Clinical Oncology and worked closely with European Cancer Organization (E.C.O.) Member Societies, particularly EONS, ESGO, SIOPE, and SIOG. A lecturer at international meetings and holding a teaching contract with the University of Milan, Dr. Peccatori was recognized as eligible for associate professor status in 2012 in disciplines 06D3 and 06H1.

Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Peccatori has made significant contributions to fertility preservation in cancer patients, notably as past president of PROFERT, which helped establish the Italian network for this cause. He received research grants from the Ministry of Health in 2012 for a project on cancer and infertility.

Reflecting on his clinical practice, Dr. Peccatori recalls the emotional challenges he faced when first encountering the pain and suffering of his patients. He remembers F., an elderly woman with metastatic ovarian cancer, and P., a mother of three with metastatic breast cancer, whose stories deeply impacted him. However, he also recalls the happiness of L., who had two children after cancer, and A., who was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling during her treatment. These experiences have shaped his philosophy of oncology, reminding him that:

“We are all interconnected, and this is what makes being an oncologist so rewarding.”

Earlier in his career, his research interests included hematological malignancies, particularly malignant lymphomas, and autologous and allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in solid tumors and leukemias.

Dr. Peccatori has served or is serving on the editorial committees of several prominent journals, including Ecancermedicalscience, Cancerworld, Journal of Human Lactation, Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology, Tumori Journal, and Cancers. He is the author and co-author of over 300 publications or letters in peer-reviewed journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Breast Cancer Treatment Reviews, and The Breast.

Beyond the white coat

Outside of medicine, Dr. Peccatori is a family man, a nature lover, and a lifelong cinephile. He has been happily married to Giulia since 1990, and together they have raised five children. Now a proud grandfather of two, he cherishes time with his growing family. In recent years, he has dedicated himself to renovating a country house in the Apennine mountains, a place filled with personal history—his grandfather was born in the same small village. His dream is to revitalize the area while growing mushrooms and truffles. Nothing brings him more peace than waking up in the middle of nature and collecting fresh eggs from his three hens, Pippa, Charlie, and Malala.

His love for film started in his twenties when he spent countless evenings at a cineforum in Milan, captivated by the works of Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Stanley Kubrick, and Woody Allen. He still remembers the emotions sparked by Fanny and Alexander, Amarcord, A Clockwork Orange, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. While his tastes have shifted toward science fiction and action movies, he remains fascinated by storytelling in all its forms.

Books have also been a constant in his life. During his youth, the works of Joseph Conrad (Lord Jim, Nostromo, Typhoon), Herman Melville (Moby Dick, Billy Budd, Typee), and Ernest Hemingway (The Old Man and the Sea) fueled his adventurous spirit. Today, he enjoys discovering new voices in Italian literature and discussing them with colleagues in the book club at the European Institute of Oncology.

More than anything, Dr. Peccatori values human connection. Whether through mentoring young oncologists, engaging in deep conversations over a good book, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the countryside, he finds meaning in the relationships he builds. Teaching, learning, and sharing experiences – these are the things that truly define him.

A quote from Dr. Peccatori

When asked what advice he would give to those starting a career in oncology, Dr. Peccatori shared:

“Be wise, open, and truly connected with your patients. Don’t fear what you don’t know, and have the humility to share your uncertainties—with colleagues and patients alike. Stay true to your work, but also to yourself and your family. Learn to appreciate beauty, even when it’s not obvious, and always remember: a happy doctor is a better doctor.”
