Karen Knudsen: Yet another reason to hit the gym
Karen Knudsen, Executive Strategic Advisor and Immediate Past CEO of the American Cancer Society (ACS), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Francesco Bettariga, PhD candidate at the Exercise Medicine Research Institute, published in British Journal of Sports Medicine:
“Yet another reason to hit the gym! We all know that exercise is cancer prevention, but it turns out to have a powerful role in cancer survivorship as well.
A recent study analyzing 42 trials with ~47,000 cancer patients revealed that higher muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness significantly reduced the risk of death from all causes and cancer specifically.
Key takeaway: Strength training and aerobic exercise can improve survival outcomes and overall quality of life.
This underscores the growing importance of exercise as medicine in cancer care. Patients, when able, can collaborate with their care teams to incorporate safe, tailored physical activities into their treatment plans—empowering themselves to take charge of their health.
