Now speaking at Global Voices in Renal Oncology (VIRO) 2025, organized by OncoDaily, Dr. Petros Grivas, Clinical Director of the GU Cancer Program at the University of Washington, on the topic “Making a Career in GU Oncology”.
Dr. Grivas underscored the “why” behind career choices, advocating for passion, early planning, and rigorous training across patient care, research, and teaching. He distinguished mentorship (guidance on projects and pathways) from sponsorship (opening doors and visibility), urging faculty to take ownership of mentees’ success and to normalize constructive, bidirectional feedback.
He highlighted implementation science as a major growth area—bringing evidence to the bedside, reducing disparities, and aligning trials with what patients value (survival, quality of life, PROs). Practical advice included choosing feasible projects while balancing low-risk and high-impact ideas, building collaborative teams and cooperative-group roles, and using professional meetings and social media thoughtfully to grow networks and opportunities. The session concluded with audience Q&A.
Closing his talk, Dr. Grivas reminded the audience: “The Sky is not a limit… don’t put restrictions on ourselves. Always work harder, and the goal is to be better tomorrow than we are today.”
