According to healthcareasiamagazine.com, Health New Zealand is investing $15.5m (NZ$27.1m) over the next three years to grow stem cell transplant services by boosting hospital capacity, strengthening the workforce, and upgrading critical infrastructure.
This funding will enable a 27–38% increase in allogeneic stem cell transplants, depending on case complexity, and builds on the earlier $3.5m (NZ$6.11m) injection for transplant services in 2024/25.

The investment will expand inpatient bed capacity at Auckland City Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital and fund 79 new full-time positions across transplant centres in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Health New Zealand will also roll out a digital tool in the first half of 2026 to streamline transplant scheduling and provide a national view of wait times and treatment needs.
Additionally, infrastructure upgrades are planned at Wellington Regional Hospital to overcome existing physical constraints and better support the growing demand for transplant services.
