Alexander Lyon, Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Brompton Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“I am deeply honoured and delighted to receive the 2026 Thomas Force Pioneer Award from the International Cardio-Oncology Society at GCOS2026 in Williamsburg.
This award holds particular meaning because it commemorates the life and work of Dr Thomas L. Force who was an exceptional cardiovascular scientist, clinician and mentor whose research helped establish the mechanistic foundations of modern cardio-oncology, and whom I had the good fortune to meet on several occasions and discuss the mechanisms underlying TKI-related cardiovascular toxicity.
His work, including seminal studies of targeted-therapy cardiotoxicity, helped bridge fundamental cardiovascular science with the urgent clinical need to protect people receiving cancer treatment. The IC-OS award was established in 2018 in his memory to recognise leaders advancing this same multidisciplinary mission.
My own journey in cardio-oncology has been shaped by the privilege of working alongside outstanding patients, colleagues and collaborators across cardiology, oncology, haematology, imaging, primary care, nursing, pharmacy and research. From developing the cardio-oncology service and Centre of Excellence at Royal Brompton and Harefield, to co-chairing the 2022 ESC Guidelines on Cardio-Oncology, the shared goal has remained simple: ensuring that every person can receive the most effective cancer treatment safely while protecting their cardiovascular health.
I accept this recognition on behalf of the many teams and international colleagues who have built this field together and with gratitude to the patients who inspire us to do better every day.
Thank you to IC-OS for this very special honour. I look forward to continuing Tom Force’s legacy: bringing science, collaboration and compassionate clinical care together to improve outcomes for cancer patients and survivors affected by cancer treatments.”
