Michele Carbone: The world is full of good, honest, nice people
Michele Carbone, Director of Thoracic Oncology Program at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center, recently shared on LinkedIn
“So, today I lost my wallet. I left inside the Whole Food shopping cart. I ran back, to the shop, was gone, nobody had turned it in. I was really down.
More than a wallet is a small purse where I have everything, including documents, credit cards, car keys, the photos I care the most, gold cufflinks from my grandfather, his ID card, a zip drive with a paper, and a grant I am writing. I also had lots of cash: about 1600 Euros and 200 dollars. All gone! Now what? Do I call the police? For what, they will think I am an idiot.
The phone rings, is Cathy, “Are you OK? Someone called at work, his name is Chad he has your wallet”. I called Chad, he said he would have waited for me at Sprout, a 10-minute drive from my home.
Suddenly a day that was going terribly wrong became a wonderful day. I got everything back, I met two good men, Chad a young man in his early 20s, and his father.
See, the world is full of good, honest, nice people. Yes, there are a few dishonest ones and because they are the ones who make into the news many think that most people are dishonest. The opposite is true, most people are honest, but because of a minority of scumbags who make the news, we have the impression that honest people are rare.
Thank you Chad, and Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
