Lacy Hubbard: HPV Prevention is About Education, Screening and Treatment are About Access
Lacy Hubbard, President of the Elekta Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When We Talk About SRHR, Let’s Not Forget HPV.
Every two minutes, a woman loses her life to cervical cancer caused by a virus we know how to prevent: HPV (Human Papillomavirus).
Most of these women live in low – and middle-income countries.
HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer.
And we have the tools: vaccines, screening, and treatment.
So what’s missing?
Access. Awareness. Equity. When we talk about SRHR (sexual and reproductive health and rights), we must speak of HPV because it touches every part of it.
HPV prevention is about education.
Screening and treatment are about access.
Eliminating cervical cancer is about justice. When a woman dies from cervical cancer, it’s not just a medical failure. It’s a failure of justice. Of systems. Of priorities.
SRHR means:
• The right to know how to protect your body
• The right to get vaccinated, no matter where you live
• The right to be screened and treated before it’s too lateI’ve met too many women who never heard of HPV until it was already advanced.
And I’ve seen time and again what’s possible when we act early.
Let’s be clear: HPV isn’t just a health issue.
It’s a human rights issue.
Let’s treat it like one.”
