Francisco J. Esteva: It is important to understand the treatment of early breast cancer must be individualized
Francisco J. Esteva, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The actress Olivia Munn recently announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She credits her physician for completing a thorough risk assessment, showing a high risk for breast cancer. After screening mammograms she had MRI of the breasts, which is recommended for women with 20% or greater risk of developing the disease.
Her MRI showed suspicious areas that lead to breast biopsies and ultimately the breast cancer diagnosis. Going through risk assessment and screening tests were smart decisions.
However, it is important to understand the treatment of early breast cancer must be individualized. Not all women need removal of both breasts (bilateral mastectomy), as Olivia Munn did. Treatment options should be discussed with a surgeon and a medical oncologist to come up with the best plan for each patient.”
