Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, is a common treatment method used in the management of cancer. It involves the use of high-energy radiation beams to target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Radiation therapy can be delivered externally, where a machine directs radiation beams towards the tumor site from outside the body, or internally, where radioactive materials are placed directly inside or near the tumor. This treatment approach aims to shrink tumors, alleviate symptoms, and eradicate cancer cells, either as the primary treatment modality or in combination with other therapies like surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is carefully planned and tailored to each patient’s unique circumstances, including tumor type, location, and stage, with the ultimate goal of achieving optimal treatment outcomes while minimizing side effects.
