Mahmoud Hammad, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Pediatric Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo University, and one of the leading pediatric oncologists in the Middle East and Africa. With more than two decades of continuous service at NCI Cairo, he has played a major role in advancing pediatric cancer care, transplantation services, clinical training, and regional oncology capacity-building. He currently serves as Chair of Education and Training for SIOP Africa, where he leads continent-wide initiatives to strengthen pediatric oncology education and improve survival outcomes for children with cancer across low- and middle-income countries.

Professor Hammad’s clinical work is centered on pediatric hematology/oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with extensive expertise in leukemia, lymphomas, solid tumors of childhood, and transplantation for both malignant and non-malignant hematologic disorders. He serves as a senior consultant in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant across several major institutions in Egypt and the region, including Saudi German Hospital, Dar Al Fouad Hospital, Wadi ElNeel Hospital, and Dar El Salam Cancer Hospital Harmal—reflecting his reputation as a highly sought-after expert in complex pediatric oncology and transplant care.

For over fifteen years, Professor Hammad was a Consultant of Pediatric Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 (2008–2023), where he contributed significantly to the development of one of the largest and most advanced pediatric cancer programs in the world. He has also served as Assistant Professor and later Professor at the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, since 2005, where he continues to teach, supervise research, and mentor the next generation of pediatric oncologists and transplant physicians.

His international academic development includes a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation at the University of Freiburg, Germany, where he received advanced training in transplant immunology and pediatric bone marrow transplantation. He subsequently completed the Master of Advanced Oncology at Ulm University, Germany (2015–2018), a prestigious European program combining rigorous academic coursework with clinical and translational oncology research.

Professor Hammad has been deeply engaged in improving pediatric oncology education and research in Africa. Through his role in SIOP Africa, he has led programs in training, workforce development, and clinical guideline harmonization, ensuring equitable access to quality pediatric cancer care across the continent. His contributions support strategic global oncology partnerships and align with WHO initiatives for childhood cancer.

Across his clinical career, Professor Hammad has established a broad portfolio of leadership roles across major hospitals, where he oversees pediatric oncology units and stem cell transplant programs, guiding multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of advanced, evidence-based care. His work has had a substantial impact on improving outcomes for children with high-risk malignancies and complex hematologic disorders in Egypt and beyond.

Professor Hammad remains a respected educator, clinician, and regional leader in pediatric oncology and transplantation, dedicated to strengthening the standards of care and training throughout Africa and the Middle East.
