New ESTRO-ISRS Clinical Guidelines

ESTRO–ISRS guidelines, developed by the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS) in collaboration with ESTRO, are intended to support the safe and effective practice of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The ESTRO–ISRS guidelines serve as a consolidated reference for clinicians involved in both intracranial and extracranial stereotactic treatments.

The guidelines cover 10 extracranial and 24 intracranial topics, encompassing both benign and malignant conditions. Recommendations are based on available evidence and current clinical practice. Users can filter topics by disease site or indication, such as intracranial benign tumors, and access the referenced scientific literature associated with each guideline.

A Structured Resource for Clinical Use

The ISRS–ESTRO guidelines are organized to facilitate practical use in clinical settings. Clinicians can identify guidance relevant to specific disease sites and treatment scenarios and review the supporting references underlying the recommendations.

This structure supports routine clinical decision-making as well as academic review and education, making the guidelines applicable to trainees, early-career professionals, and experienced practitioners.

Best Practices in SRS and SBRT

A central aim of the ISRS is to outline best practices for the delivery of SRS and SBRT. Over recent years, multiple intra-cranial and extra-cranial guidelines have been developed under the direction of ISRS committees.

These documents reflect consensus-based recommendations informed by contributions from experts with experience across different practice environments.

Multidisciplinary and International Input

Guideline development involves multidisciplinary collaboration, including specialists in radiation oncology, neurosurgery, medical physics, and related fields. This approach allows for consideration of clinical indications, technical aspects of treatment planning and delivery, and safety-related issues.

By incorporating international perspectives, the guidelines aim to support consistency and quality in stereotactic radiotherapy practice across different clinical contexts.

Access to the Guidelines

Most ISRS–ESTRO guidelines are available through open-access publication. The full texts can be accessed via the publication titles, allowing readers to review the recommendations and associated references without restriction.
