Julie R. Gralow, MD, FACP, FASCO
Julie R. Gralow is the Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Dr. Gralow is internationally known for her breast cancer clinical care, education, and research.
She is the founder of the Women’s Empowerment Cancer Advocacy Network (WE CAN), a group dedicated to empowering women cancer patient advocates in low—and middle-income countries, and a Co-founder of Team Survivor Northwest.
Career
Julie R. Gralow received her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and her medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine. She trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School. She completed a medical oncology fellowship at the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
During her fellowship, she focused on the clinical relevance of HER2 in breast cancer, contributing to the development of HER2-targeted therapies.
She previously served as the Jill Bennett Endowed Professor of Breast Medical Oncology and Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Gralow was also a member of the clinical research division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the director of breast medical oncology at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
She serves as a Team Physician for Team Survivor Northwest, which she Co-founded in 1995.
She serves on the advisory board of Global Focus on Cancer and the Board of Peace Island Medical Centre, a rural access hospital in Washington State.
She founded the Women’s Empowerment Cancer Advocacy Network (WE CAN).
Dr. Gralow served ASCO in a variety of volunteer and leadership roles, including chairing the ASCO Academic Global Oncology Task Force and co-chairing the ASCO Resource Stratified Guideline Advisory Group. She also served on the editorial board of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO)/ASCO Global Curriculum in Medical Oncology. She also supervised the TAPUR trial led by ASCO.
Dr. Gralow also served as an adjunct professor in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health and as a faculty member of the UW’s Ellison Center for Russian, East Europe, and Central Asian Studies. She was an advisory council member for the Uganda Cancer Institute’s adult Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program.
Dr. Gralow was influenced by mentors such as Richard Miller, MD, and Ron Levy, MD, leading to her interest in oncology research.
Beyond The White Coat
Dr. Julie R. Gralow is a researcher, clinician, health enthusiast, teacher, advocate, author, humanitarian, and mentor.
She is also fond of mountain climbing. Dr. Gralow helped initiate Team Survivor Northwest, a nonprofit that improves the lives of breast cancer survivors through fitness. The organization offers walking, hiking, Pilates, Dragon Boat racing, and triathlon training for recovering women.
Dr. Gralow’s work in global cancer health has focused on lifestyle-related issues, which directly increase the risk of breast cancer and produce poorer long-term outcomes for survivors.
In an interview with The ASCO Post, she stated, “Medicine seemed like the perfect way to combine my interests in science and research into a career.”
