“It’s fantastic to see the results of the NHS-Galleri trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine and Nature Medicine.
This was an epic trial to work on as a trial manager. It was made possible by those who volunteered to participate, as well as many different professionals, communities and organisations working together, with a shared purpose and a clear vision of how we can improve early cancer detection and advance the fields of multi-cancer early detection (MCED) and clinical trial delivery.
There were some incredible operational achievements throughout the course of the trial delivery, including:
- Inviting approximately 1.5 million people and enrolling just under 143,000 participants, with a good demographic representation of England, in 10.5 months
- Delivering the trial in communities, deploying 11 mobile clinics, across 151 locations
- Establishing the first ever model for clinical referral to the NHS following a cancer signal detected result and making referrals directly to over 50 NHS trusts over the 3 years during the trial
- Very strong retention of participants across the three years (88% of participants retained)
Congratulations and well done to all of the authors, GRAIL, Centre for Cancer Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis (WIPH), NHS England and EMS Healthcare.
It’s particularly nice to see so many colleagues and organizations mentioned in the acknowledgements of both papers and I am grateful to be included.
