Almost 29% of Adults in the WHO Europe Region Smoke, It’s One of the Highest Rates in the World – Lung Cancer Europe
Lung Cancer Europe shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Almost 29% of adults in the WHO Europe region smoke – one of the highest rates in the world.
Tobacco is still a major risk factor for lung cancer. But it’s not just a behaviour, it’s a medical condition. And stigma helps no one.
This year’s campaign highlights how the tobacco industry continues to hook new generations through flavours, sleek design, and targeted marketing.
Professor Sanjay Agrawal, Respiratory Consultant and NHS England’s National Specialty Advisor for Tobacco Dependency, puts it clearly: “Tobacco dependency is a medical condition. Most people who smoke want to stop – but they need help to do it.”
To truly prevent lung cancer (including in the EU’s Beating Cancer Plan) we need compassionate, evidence-based and equitable approaches.
That means screening access based on evidence and risk, not postcode.WHO Europe, Tobacco Use Factsheet, 2024″
