Ursula Sansom-Daly: Embedding Psychosocial Oncology Research into Comprehensive Cancer Care for Children and Young People
Ursula Sansom-Daly, Director at UNSW Sydney, shared a post by Eden Robertson, Senior Researcher at Children’s Medical Research Institute, adding:
“Particularly delighted to see this paper in print.
In a few short months the Minderoo Comprehensive Children’s Cancer Centre opens in Sydney – the first of its kind in Australia. On the eve of the doors opening to this comprehensive cancer centre, our team has challenged ourselves to think about what truly comprehensive, humanistic, and person- and family-centered cancer care looks like for children, adolescents + young adults across the cancer continuum.
And ….how do we get there? Here are a few of our thoughts. Loved the team-writing behind this piece.
And grateful to our valued collaborators Prof Claire Wakefield, Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr Richard Mitchell and Prof Richard Cohn, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network + Prof Michelle Haber, Children’s Cancer Institute.”
Quoting Eden Robertson‘s post:
“Last year, the postdocs at the Behavioural Sciences Unit, led by Ursula Sansom-Daly, tried out the “Paper in a day” approach. We had quite ambitious plans to come together to get a paper conceptualised and drafted within a single day. While it has been over 6 months since we initially sat down to write, our “Paper in a day” is now published with Cancers and available online! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gx9cYCEU
Some key take homes to whet your appetite:
As the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre prepares to open, our commentary highlights the importance of investing in partnerships with multidisciplinary health professionals, community organisations, and people with lived experience to truly achieve comprehensive care.
Guided by the wisdom of Richard Cohn AM, and Claire Wakefield that “cure is not enough”, the BSU have developed many theoretically driven, evidence-based interventions to address the identified psychosocial needs of families.
Our role of psychosocial oncology researchers has transformed into a sort of “𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳”, acting as conduits to translate the “pain points” that families share with us among key parties, and then advocating with and for our families to drive positive change.
Congrats to those involved in this paper, and throughout the journey of the BSU.”
