Sami (Papacek) Mansfield: Lipid Metabolism – A Key Player in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Resistance

Sami (Papacek) Mansfield, Founder of Cancer Wellness for Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Lipid Metabolism: A Key Player in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Resistance
As we deepen our understanding of the intricate relationship between metabolic health and cancer, a recent study has shed light on the role of lipid metabolism in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This study particularly caught my eye as another key piece of research that elevetes the importance of metabolichealth in cancer – giving us as individuals a strategy that we can use to improve outcomes. TNBC accounts for approximately 15–20% of all breast cancer cases. The 5-year relative survival rates vary based on the stage at diagnosis:
Localized: 91%
Regional: 66%
Distant (metastatic): 12%
Key Insights of this study.
  • Fatty Acid Uptake and Synthesis: TNBC cells often increase their intake and production of fatty acids, providing energy and building blocks for rapid growth.
  • Cholesterol Metabolism: Elevated cholesterol levels and its byproducts can accelerate tumor progression and interfere with immune responses.
  • Therapy Resistance: Changes in lipid metabolism contribute to resistance against standard treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
Implications for Metabolic Health: The reprogramming of lipid metabolism in TNBC not only affects cancer progression but also has broader implications for a patient’s overall metabolic health. Disruptions in lipid processing can lead to systemic metabolic issues, emphasizing the need for comprehensive care approaches that address both cancer and metabolic health.
