Salvatore Provenzano: Shaping the future of EU health networking in cancer care

Salvatore Provenzano, Medical Oncologist at IRCCS National Cancer Institute Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn by EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer about a recent paper he co-authored with colleagues published in ESMO Open:

“Shaping the future of EU health networking in cancer care. Some issues still to be tackled are addressed in the just published green paper from the JANE community.”

Quoting JANE-2 (EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer)’s post:

“Building European Networks for Lasting Impact: Insights from JANE-2.

During the opening session of JANE-2 Kick-Off Meeting, the coordinator Paolo G. Casali has shared a truly inspiring vision – one that transcends the scope of individual projects to create lasting value. The goal is not just to connect institutions but to foster genuine cooperation through inclusive Networks of Expertise that go beyond technological connections.

As emphasized during the meeting, the aim is to create institutional networks that outlive the duration of the project, becoming permanent networks – a unique privilege of the European Union environment. These networks facilitate meaningful collaboration, particularly in areas such as rare cancers, where effective cooperation is essential to tackle complex challenges.

Additionally, one of the foundational principles of JANE-2 is subsidiarity – ensuring that actions are carried out at the most localized level possible, where they are needed. Such an approach is only feasible through robust and inclusive networks, making it a cornerstone of this initiative.

Ultimately, JANE-2 aspires to achieve equity in cancer care across the EU. This vision of equity is deeply rooted in the principle of justice, ensuring fair access to care and innovation for all. Importantly, these Networks of Expertise are not solely focused on research but about bridging the gap between research outcomes and clinical practice, ensuring that innovation directly translates into patient benefit.

JANE-2 serves as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration, subsidiarity, and justice within the European Union. Together, we can build networks that create meaningful, enduring impact.”
