Raymond Mailhot: Another ASCO25 Highlight – Study on Cancer’s Impact on AYA Scholastic Experiences
Raymond Mailhot, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at University of Florida College of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Another ASCO highlight: being part of the team with first author Carla L Fisher and coauthors Carma Bylund and Elisa Weiss to present patient, parent, and clinician perspectives on the impact of cancer on adolescents’ and young adults’ scholastic experiences.
We remain the first American research team to directly link medical data and scholastic performance data (like how a child performs on state testing), and this work importantly provides qualitative and narrative evidence of how many domains can be impacted – not just passing classes – but watching your school cohort move ahead or losing the ability to participate in meaningful extra-curriculars. This work included patients with blood related cancers, emphasizing that school changes impact not just those with brain tumors.
The three of us below have been fortunate recipients of support by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (this work being a secondary analysis of work funded by LLS), and we hope to continue to grow this work (with grant applications underway so wish us luck).”
