Piotr Wysocki: Vaccination of adult cancer patients – ASCO guidelines
Piotr Wysocki, Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Oncology at Jagiellonian University Hospital in Poland, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“ASCO has just published comprehensive recommendations for preventive vaccination in adult cancer patients. The guidelines in the form of systematic reviews are based on 102 publications (24 systematic reviews, 14 RCTs, and 64 nonrandomized studies). The largest body of evidence addressed COVID-19 vaccines.
Optimizing vaccination status should represent one of the critical elements in the care of patients with cancer. This approach should include the following points:
- documentation of vaccination status at the time of the first patient
- timely provision of recommended vaccines
- appropriate revaccination after hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, or B-cell–depleting therapy.
A critical aspect of cancer patient care is active interaction and coordination among healthcare providers, including primary care practitioners, pharmacists, and nursing team members. Vaccination of household contacts enhances protection for patients with cancer.”
