Penilla Gunther highlights Transplant Patient Journey around Infectious Diseases at ESOT Webinar
Penilla Gunther, Member of the EU Cancer Mission Board at European Commission, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday, ESOT – European Society for Organ Transplantation with support from Takeda held a webinar with the title Transplant Patient Journey around Infectious Diseases.
In my introductionary reflections I tried to high-light when you as transplanted have to go to primary or the emergency care, it sometimes happens that the interest from the doctors/nurses do not focus on the reason why I am there – it’s more interesting with the fact that I am transplanted, because the knowledge among HCPs outside the specialists in transplant care is not very high at all!
Does it reduce the fear of the patient about a presumed infection to get the right treatment? The answer is quite clear: No.
Communicable diseases have increased overall since the pandemic, and even though access to more vaccines is better than ever, the fear transplant patients can feel about infections and possible impact on their health is very common and needs to be addressed.
To qoute Professor Anna Forsberg:“The life you have been given, is also meant to live!”
Patients and HCPs need to work together for more knowledge in healthcare overall about transplant patients, immunosuppression, a lower immune system etc.
I am looking forward to the coming FOKUS Patient Transplantation Forum in October where we can discuss this topic more together hopefully with Svensk Förening För Allmän Medicin (The Swedish Association of General Practice), Svenska Distriktsläkarföreningen (Swedish District Medical Association), SWESEM (Swedish Society for Emergency Medicine) Svensk Transplantationsförening (Swedish Transplantation Association).Thank you William Scott, Fiona Loud, Luciano Potena, Liz Schick, Eric Epailly, Saskia Bos and Fernanda Ortiz for the seminar and your insights!
Here you can take part of the recording of the webinar.”
