Nicola Fusco: Rare Tumors Deserve Our Best Research Efforts
Nicola Fusco, Director, Division of Pathology at IEO European Institute of Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Rare tumors deserve our best research efforts!
I am pleased to share our newly published systematic review on mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the breast, a vanishingly rare salivary gland–like tumor of the breast, carried out in collaboration with colleagues Sami Akbulut and Yasin Dada from İnönü Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine, Malatya, Turkey.
This work provides systematic information on all available clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular data on breast MEC. While most low-grade cases behave indolently, high-grade MECs are associated with aggressive clinical courses, underscoring the need for careful molecular characterization and long-term follow-up.
This study follows the path of our previous work, ‘The molecular landscape of breast mucoepidermoid carcinoma’, which provided the first large-scale molecular analysis of this entity. Together, these efforts contribute to building an evidence base that may support tailored management strategies and future therapeutic approaches for patients affected by such rare tumors.
Rare breast cancers like MEC remind us that precision oncology must extend beyond common entities. This is an invitation to the scientific community: let’s keep advancing knowledge on rare breast tumors to provide better patient care.
Proud of this fruitful collaboration, and grateful to all co-authors who contributed.”
