Michael Sapienza: A Troubling Trend – GI Cancers Are Rising among Adults under 50
Michael Sapienza, Chief Executive Officer of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Thejus Jayakrishnan and Kimmie Ng published in JAMA:
“A new review published in JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association, last week highlights a troubling trend: gastrointestinal cancers are now the fastest-growing type of cancers among adults under 50 – with colorectal cancer being the most common by far.
Aria Bendix of NBC Universal News wrote a comprehensive piece about the findings with expert commentary from the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s Chief Medical Consultant, Dr. John Marshall. This visibility matters because it helps drive awareness at a critical time, when more action is needed.
We’ve been sounding the alarm on rising young-onset colorectal cancer rates for years. As this trend accelerates, our mission and work become even more urgent to save lives.
The data in this review reinforces what the Alliance has long recognized and continues to push for: We need broader awareness, earlier screenings, more research and treatments, and stronger systems of support for younger adults and all those facing colorectal cancer.”
