Kiran A. Kumar – Adaptive RT Offers Safer, Shorter Radiotherapy for Lymphomas
Kiran A. Kumar, Associate Professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, shared ASTRO’s post on X:
“Would argue that lymphomas are one of the most important diseases to consider adaptive RT as they are exquisitely radiosensitive, often in difficult to target locations, and many have long term survival so even small decreases in dose to OARs are likely meaningful. Excited…”
He continued:
“To share our UTSW Radiation Oncology experience of >70 lymphomas showing that oART was necessary to maintain PTV coverage with smaller margins and that tumors shrank on average 25% during RT. Safer and shorter course treatment options will hopefully expand the use of RT in lymphomas”
This commentary accompanied ASTRO’s highlight of the recent publication:
“Adaptive RT in lymphomas better targeting with reduced margins, deceased dose to OARs, adaptation to shrinking tumors, shorter course treatments, and easier treatments of multi-targets/SIBs. Read Kiran A. Kuma ,UTSW Radiation Oncology et al’s article in the Red Journal.”
Title: Adaptive Radiation Therapy in Lymphomas: Indications, Early Experiences, and Future Directions
Authors: Kiran A. Kumar, Xinran Zhong, Zohaib Iqbal, Praveen Ramakrishnan Geethakumari, Farrukh T. Awan, Elif Yilmaz, Heather Wolfe, Mohammad (Faizan) Zahid, Hsiao-Ching Li, Alka Mallik, David Parsons, Neil B. Desai, Shahed N. Badiyan, Mu-Han Lin, Robert D. Timmerman, Margaret M. Kozak
The article, published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (the Red Journal), presents findings from UT Southwestern’s experience and supports expanding the role of RT in lymphoma care through personalized, adaptive approaches.
